Local SEO in Vancouver, Where Three Blocks Decides Everything

Vancouver is the most crowded search market in the province. We get local businesses into the map pack for the neighbourhoods that actually send them customers.

The Vancouver Problem: Your Radius Is Smaller Than You Think

Most business owners assume that ranking “in Vancouver” is one job. It is not. Google decides what to show based on where the person searching is standing, and in a city this dense that changes block by block.

A studio on Main Street can own every search in Mount Pleasant and be completely absent from the same search made in Kitsilano, ten minutes away. A dentist in the West End competes with a different set of businesses than one in Marpole, even though both are “Vancouver dentists”. Vancouver packs more competing businesses into each square kilometre than anywhere else in British Columbia, so the distance Google is willing to look before it finds someone else is short.

This is made sharper by how people move here. Vancouver is a walking and transit city. Someone in Gastown searching for a barber is not planning a twenty-minute drive, so Google does not offer them one. The practical effect is that your visible radius might be a handful of blocks, and no amount of stuffing “Vancouver” into your homepage widens it.

What does widen it: reviews that arrive steadily, business details that match everywhere Google checks, and real pages about the areas you genuinely serve. That is the work.

What Vancouver Local SEO Involves

Six things move local rankings. We work them in this order, because each one makes the next one worth doing.

storefront

Google Business Profile

Claim, verify, then fill every field: primary and secondary categories, service areas, hours, products, photos. The primary category alone decides which searches you are even eligible to appear in.

Citation & NAP Cleanup

Vancouver businesses move premises often. Old Yelp entries, a previous suite number, a disconnected line — each mismatch chips away at how confident Google is about where you actually are. How citations work →

reviews

Review Velocity

In a market where competitors have hundreds of reviews, the pattern matters more than the total. Steady arrivals beat a burst, and reviews that name the service and the neighbourhood do double duty.

map

Neighbourhood Pages

Not a list of area names in your footer. Real pages for the neighbourhoods you actually work in, written so someone from that area recognises their own streets in them.

speed

Site Speed & Mobile

Most local searches here happen mid-walk, on a phone, on mobile data. A site that takes six seconds loses the customer before your ranking ever got a chance to matter.

monitoring

Tracking That Means Something

Calls, direction requests and form fills — not impressions. You get a plain monthly summary of what moved, what did not, and what we are doing about it.

Local SEO by Vancouver Neighbourhood

Each of these behaves like its own small market, with its own competitors and its own search patterns.

Downtown & Yaletown

The densest competition in the province, and a mix of residents, office workers and visitors all searching for different things at different hours. Category precision matters more here than anywhere.

Mount Pleasant & Main Street

Independent studios, trades and food businesses with strong neighbourhood loyalty. Reviews that mention the area carry real weight because customers search that way.

Kitsilano & Point Grey

Health, fitness and wellness businesses competing on a stretch of a few blocks. Higher-income households that read reviews properly before they book.

Gastown & Chinatown

Heavy visitor traffic layered over a local base. Photos and hours accuracy do more work here than they do elsewhere, because a lot of searches end in a walk-in within the hour.

West End & Coal Harbour

One of the densest residential areas in North America, almost entirely walking-radius searches. If you are not within a few blocks, you are usually not shown.

East Van, Marpole & Kerrisdale

Established residential neighbourhoods where trades, clinics and family services compete. Less contested than the core, and often where the fastest wins are available.

What You Are Actually Up Against

Vancouver businesses are not competing with a quiet field. The companies holding the top three map slots for most categories have usually been collecting reviews since before you opened, and many of them are paying an agency every month to keep the position.

There is a second layer too. Agencies across Metro Vancouver, and plenty from outside it, target Vancouver search terms without being anywhere near the city. They often have stronger domains than a local independent does. What they cannot manufacture is genuine proximity and genuine local signals — which is the advantage a real Vancouver business holds, provided those signals are actually set up.

Language is part of the picture as well. Vancouver has large Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Tagalog, Korean and Farsi speaking communities, and people search in the language they think in. Your categories, description and the language your reviews are written in all influence which of those searches you turn up for.

None of this makes the market unwinnable. It means the neighbourhood-level searches are where the realistic opening is, and city-wide terms come later, once the foundation is doing its job.

How We Approach a Vancouver Business

1

Map where you actually rank

Not one ranking — a grid. We check your position from multiple points across the city, so you can see the exact shape of your visible radius and where it drops off. Most owners are surprised by how small it is.

2

Fix the foundation

Profile completed and categories corrected, conflicting listings cleaned up, local schema added to the site. Unglamorous, and where most of the early movement comes from.

3

Win the neighbourhoods first

Rather than fighting for “Vancouver” on day one, we take the areas where you are already close, build real pages for them, and expand the radius outward from there.

4

Keep feeding it

Steady reviews, fresh profile posts, new content each month. The businesses that hold the map pack are the ones that never stopped, and in Vancouver the gap closes quickly if you do.

Local SEO or a New Website First?

These solve different problems, and buying the wrong one first is the most common mistake we see.

Local SEO first if your site works but the phone is quiet, if you can see competitors in the map pack where you are missing, or if you rank when you search from your own shop and vanish from across town.

Website first if you have no site, if yours is slow or broken on phones, or if it is trapped in a platform nobody can edit. There is no point driving searches to a page that loses the visitor on arrival.

Most Vancouver businesses need some of both, and we will tell you honestly which to spend on first. If the site is the bottleneck, start with our Vancouver web design service. If you want to understand the map pack yourself before spending anything, our guides to Google Business Profile versus a website and ranking a local business on Google both cover it plainly. Outside the city, we do the same work in Surrey.

Vancouver Local SEO FAQ

Why does my business rank in one neighbourhood but not another?expand_more

Google weighs how close the searcher is to your business, and Vancouver is dense enough that a few kilometres changes the result. A shop on Main Street can dominate Mount Pleasant searches and be invisible in Kitsilano. You widen that radius with reviews, citation consistency and pages that genuinely cover the areas you serve — not by adding city names to your footer.

How long does local SEO take in Vancouver?expand_more

Google Business Profile fixes can move the map pack in two to four weeks. Competitive Vancouver organic terms usually take four to six months, because you are up against agencies and firms with a decade of reviews and links behind them. Anyone promising page one in a month is selling you something.

Do I need a physical Vancouver address to rank there?expand_more

For the map pack, yes — you need a real address or a properly defined service area in Vancouver. Virtual offices and mailbox addresses get profiles suspended. If you serve Vancouver but are based elsewhere, you set up a service area business and compete mainly in organic results rather than the map.

Is Vancouver harder than the suburbs?expand_more

Yes. More competitors per square kilometre than anywhere else in the province, incumbents with years of reviews, and a tighter searcher radius because people walk and take transit. The upside is that neighbourhood-level searches are far less contested than city-wide ones, which is where we start.

Does my website still matter if I have a Google Business Profile?expand_more

More than most people expect. Google reads your website to work out what your profile is about and how much to trust it. A slow or thin site caps how far the profile can climb, and it is where the customer lands the moment they tap through.

What is a citation, and do they still matter?expand_more

A citation is anywhere online listing your business name, address and phone number — Yelp, Yellow Pages, industry directories, the BBB. They matter less than they did a decade ago, but inconsistent ones actively hurt. Old addresses and disconnected numbers are one of the most common reasons a profile stalls.
